Dexmatt is the Marvel ship bewteen Benjamin "Dex" Poindexter and Matthew "Matt" Murdock. Matt is the both the hero Daredevil and blind lawyer, while Dex is his enemy, Bullseye, but also ex FBI SWAT and ex US army. I love them so much!!! they are fucking crazy!!!!
I was originally planning on making a Bullseye shrine in 2025 but that never came to fruition. But, after seeing Dexmatt get popular like how it did last April... OOHH I HAD TO.
Realistically, they'd fall apart, but they're like batjokes to me... prefectly insane without having to worry about how'd they work canonically. In the MCU, Dex has grown to have a obsession with Matt. But hey, let's start from the beginning...!
We don't actually meet Dex until season 3 of Daredevil, but he's in the rest of the seasons after that. Important backstory for Dex is that he is mentally ill, and has been canonically diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, along with a few other things.
This is important because before he met Matt, he had a "North Star". A north star is a person Dex follows as example of how he should act, or moreso his living moral compass.
His person was Julie, his ex co-worker at a suicide hotline. To say he was stalking her would be apt... But his relationship with her was very unique. He had no romantic feelings for her, and only wanted to quietly follow her.
Before Fisk (main villain) and Daredevil, his life consisted of working for the CIA and surveiling her. After being assigned to monitor Fisk, however, his life worsens.
Through season 3, Fisk is manipulating Dex heavily, by swooping in when Dex accidentally tells Julie he's been stalking her and when he lost his job, which pushed him to suicide.
Having trashed his meds and about to pull the trigger, Dex recieves a package and mission from Fisk. It's Daredevil's suit. He wants Dex to pretend to be Daredevil, and terrorize the New York Bulletin and assasinate a whistleblower.
This, is the big lead up.!!! Dex puts on Matt's Daredevil suit to but Matt inervienes, and they have their first battle.
Matt doesn't hold up well, and Dex kind whoops him... LOL.
Matt's a very strong hero, but because of Dex's ability, he stood no chance. His fighting style is very unique, because he ricochet's objects by angling them perfectly. Matt has enhanced senses, but struggled to adapt or keep up.
Matt is so cute in that second gif. Anyway, he completes his mission and goes home.. And vaccuums. Then attempts to reconcile with Julie, explaining everything.
At this point, Fisk takes the on the center of his life, and impersonates her, telling Dex to never contact her again, and blocks his number. This sends him reeling.
Speeding up now. DD and Dex have a brief interaction because he breaks into Dex's apartment, but a lot of things happen. Fisk tells Dex to kill Karen Page because she shot and killed his close right hand man, James Wesley.
Karen was at Clinton Church at the time. Clinton Church is very important to Matt, as it is the one he attended as a child. Because Dex is terrible, he goes through the pews, picking off church-goers until shes reveals herself.
Before he could kill her, Daredevil attacks from behind. They face off again, and Matt keeps up this time. But is overpowered when he stops Dex from killing Karen.
I also forgot to mention, but Dex also kills Father Lantom, someone very close to Matt which makes him enraged.
After recapping everything I start to get why Matt hates Dex sooo much lol. Dex gets away, but the situation drives him crazy. He hates that he failed his mission so much.
More things happen that I have to skip for time because of time constraints!!!! But it is revealed that Fisk killed Julie for getting too close to Dex, and keeping him sane. quite some time after the church incident, DD calls Dex to tell him this.
Matt: Have you heard from your friend Julie lately? Matt: What do you think she'd say if she knew about the innocent people you murdered. I bet she'd be dissapointed, Dex. If she was still alive. Dex: If you... If you hurt julie... Matt: Fisk had her killed. He killed Julie so he could replace her as your north star.
Matt dropped some serious bombs here... Like this scene is mega tense. Dex thinks he's trying to get in his head, but Matt gives him the location so he can see for himself.
After finding out that Matt was right, Dex wants to kill Fisk. Matt calls him again, telling him that Fisk has a wedding planned, and that after everything he has done, Fisk does not deserve a happily ever after. Matt is so tuff this season
Both Matt and Dex rain on the Fisks parade, and everything goes to shit. Everybody's fighting and throwing shit, it's the season finale so Matt is at his limit, Dex is doing whatever, like damn.
It was like when cartoon characters fight and they turn into one of those dust balls and fists and objects fly out. I liked the finale and how Matt beat Fisk though.
However, in the process of fighting, Fisk defeats Dex and breaks his spine.
In the end, to fix his paralysis, he undergoes an experimental surgery to have the affected vertebrae be reinforced with Cogmium steel. Guess he had more money than we thought.
That's all A LOT to take in, but it all moves fast after this, I swear... A lot more happened, but I had to shave down a 13-episode season into one write up. Forgive me.
Now in DDBA S1, the first episode starts strong, where after getting drinks together, Karen, Foggy, and Matt, are interrupted by Bullseye wreaking havoc on Josies Bar.
He immediately shoots Foggy, then others. Matt comes in as Daredevil, and they fight up a pair of stairs, then to the rooftop of the bar. Matt rips off Dex's mask in the proccess.
While fighting Dex, Matt hears Karen's cries as Foggy's heartbeat slows, knowing that he is dying. Finally, his heart stops, and Foggy dies.
This breaks Matt, causing them to have a final struggle death, where he holds and shakes Dex's battered body. Dex does nothing but smiles mockingly. He throws him over the rooftop, attempting to kill him. But, his metal spine saves him from death.
I love these gifs. After killing Foggy, Dex is arrested again. Due to his lack of remorse and large rap sheet, he's sentenced given ELEVEN consecutive counts of life (lol). Without the chance of parole too.
This is not the last we see of him, though. We see him very quickly after, because while originally place in Rikers Island and under protective custody, that was changed.
He was somehow put in genpop, which would have quickly gotten him killed. So what does he do? Contacts the only lawyer he knows personally, of course...
We're also close to me showing my favorite gifs of them.
Ben: I didn't think you'd show up. I respect- Matt: Shut your mouth.
Against all reason, Matt shows up to listen to what he has to say. This is my favorite scene in the whole season, too!!!!
Ben: You hear that? Outside. That is the roar of the jungle, counselor. Ben: Is that what I am to you? An animal? One of them? Ben: Cause that's what this is all about, right? Who's the predator and who's the prey. But I have questions too.
Matt asks why he killed Foggy and Dex tells him he won't tell him if he was going to be killed in prison. Matt is ready to leave until Dex pleads with him again, then just ragebaits him.
Ben: In another life, you might be defending me. Cause that's what good men do, right? Defend their worst enemies.
This creates one of the greatest gifsets of all time.... In my opinion....
this whole post is so yummers. Ok. So, Matt is ready to leave and we get the title of the next few sections, cause I love these quotes so much.
It was at this moment that I was like "ok these dudes are crazy" and thought about what the hell their ship name is. They're mostly known as Dexmatt but I sometimes see variations like Mattdex, Bulldevil, or Devilseye. OR MEX!!!! Mex is so fucking cute.
After meeting in prison a whole slew of events occur, but again, for clarity I'm going to move past. After the head-bashing Matt gave Dex, Matt said he started hurting himself and he didn't do anything.. Ok liar...
This gets Dex moved to the infirmary, where he then uses Matt's 'help'.
Unfortunately, Fisk is having a party at the same time to celebrate him becoming mayor. Matt is also in attendance, so... Guess what happens. Dex of course shows up, disguised as a gaurd, WITH A GUN, ready to assasinate Vanessa Fisk. Then, changes his mind to Wilson, and aims, then pulls the trigger.
Before I continue, you may be wondering why he aimed for Vanessa first. It's because, throughout all this I left out one key detail... That it was revealed that after being jailed for the events of Daredevil season 3, Dex was actually visited by her.
He was in a mental health facility at the time, heavily drugged, and desprate for freedom. She offered him this. But, in exchange he had to kill Foggy Nelson, Matt Murdock's best friend. Yup... Crazy...
Back to the future, when Dex shoots the bullet, Matt gets in the way, taking the bullet for Fisk. Wow! Dex looks distraught at this. Probably because of the whole "Defending your worst enemy" thing that got his face bashed in... lol.
Then the season ends! Not like that, but he is shown to go to a safehouse, and after that it's the last we see of Dex for a while. If you think he had way less to do with S1 then you're right, a lot of fans wanted him to have more screen time.
Thankfully, season 2 is already out, so I will fill you in on that too.
The first episode of DDBA S2 is centered around Matt of course, and a bit after (a year I think) the events of S1. In the last scene of the episode, Daredevil is protecting his friend Cherry from Fisks goons, but his heartbeat reminds him of Foggy's dying one so he loses his composure.
This causes him to be overpowered then actually unmasked!!!! aaahhh!!!!!! are you nervous???? All hope seems lost but... You know what I'm gonna say next. OF COURSE DEX helps!!!!
Also, when I say help, I actually mean stalking him and shooting every agent from the window across. Then leaving him with a little clarification on who it was.
Fun! But. This also means that Dex was stalking him and now knows his true identity of Matt Murdock. Also, the title of this episode is "The Northern Star"... Double meaning.... What does that mean... #WhatDoesThatMean?
Many more events occur, like Dex going back to Clinton Church and trying to find his mom, pulling a knife on the Seminarian, taking church tokens, stalking Vanessa again, etc.
Actually, I'll touch on the church thing cause it's a little funny. Dex mentions that he wakes up to hear the church bells ring and watches the doors open for mass which I caught immediately because why does he live near here. He killed the priest of this church not but a few years earlier???? I understand why Matt hates him.
In episode 4, however we get SO MUCH MORE. It starts with a huge focus on Dex, walking us through his morning routine. (!!!!) After, he goes to Bel Aire Diner for...a banana milkshake...
Dex calls Fisks anti-vigilante task force (AVTF) and says The Punisher is there. When they arrive, he kills them. Surprisingly, he leaves the citizens alone. At the end of the sequence, we find out why.
Absolutely shocking. My jaw was on the ground. Dex's motivations have taken a huge 180... For now, Let's not talk too much about this, cause there's so much to recap.
Matt obviously finds out about this... Not just the luring and killing of Fisks soldiers but also the visiting and living near his old church. And is pissed. So, that night, he... visits... him.
They beat each other up. Or, Daredevil beats him up, because Dex is at a major disadvantage. Matt sticks to close combat, while barraging him with attacks.
As Matt beats the shit out of him, Dex tries to tell him that he's on his side, but it fails to work. So, he jumps to his neighbor who walks in on the fight, and holds her at gunpoint to get Matt to listen.
Dex: One good deed! One, good deed. Matt: Put the gun down. Dex: What I did... What that woman had me do to your friend- Matt: DON'T YOU BRING HIM UP! DON'T YOU DARE BRING HIM UP! NOT LIKE THIS. Dex: But I had to get out. I had to get my mind back. Dex: One good deed. It levels the scales again.
Dex then books it, stealing a moped and driving to Fogwell's Gym, where Fisk is having a boxing match. Dex... Going to the Fisks again.. just talking about redemption and one good deed... Okay.
The match is already over by the time Bullseye arrives, shooting down AVTF with ease, all while allowing citizens to survive. He acts swiftly when he grabs a glass paperweight and throws in Fisks direction, where he then smashes it with his newly earned belt.
The glass shards fly everywhere, including directly into Vanessa's head. Vanessa gets a shot in though, a bullet going through Dex's torso. Fisk aims a gun at Dex to finish him, but Daredevil sweeps in, where they both then go through the glass window!!!!!!
That shot is so fucking gorgeoouss. It's the background of this shrine! I chose it because they look so intimate in it, and very beautiful. It encapsulates them perfectly.
The closest they'll ever be in when they're violent with each other, the intimacy is a side product. So so beautiful that they come into a shape of a heart.
Meanwhile, Vanessa lays out, bleeding, but Matt is completely focused on Dex. He runs off and Matt chases him, furious. The game of cat and mouse begins. The episode ends there.
Episode 5 has both the Fisks and Dexmatt, sharing the screen while the story develops. We get flashbacks to Foggy's involvement with Matt's morality.
In the future, we see Matt catch Dex, ripping off his knives and finding an escape to hide them both from Fisk.
Escaping through catacombs, Matt pushes around Dex, and they make "conversation". Dex tells Matt to leave him to die, as it is his penance for killing Foggy. Daredevil has no intention of letting him die.
Dex's hair is so cute this season, but i especially love his hair here. I also provided no gif for it, but the way he walks down the catacomb is so hypnotizing.
Matt does a pretty good job of tolerating Dex until he brings up Foggy.
Superhero movies and shows sometimes try to do the thing where the hero threatens the villain but... they were straight up homosexual here.
Dex automatically enters subspace it's gen so crazy. Like why is Matt hard domming him rn? I'm crying. Maybe some guy was watching this thinking it was cool but this is gay AF right??
It so doesn't help that without context it looks like Matt is jacking him off like WTFFFF. I'm laughing all the way through writing this that my mouth hurts so bad aghhh LMAO. "Tell me you understand." woah okay...! Didn't know they was doing this!
It's seriously so hard to move past that, but Dex's bleeding out gets to him, so he tells him to leave him again. Matt refuses, and carries him down the hall and they make their way to Clinton Church.
Ben: First you try to kill me then you try to save me. Ben: And I'm the one who needs help? Matt: I'm trying to save you because I tried to kill you.
Matt throws Dex into the pews, and the conversate again.
Ben: Nurses, doctors... lawyers. Vigilantes, assassins. Killing people, saving people. Act like it makes a difference. Like it matters at all. It's not about them. Ben: It's about you. About me. Just people... and, brother... we are who we are. We're all doing the same thing here. Acting something out, scratching some kinda itch. But the worst part... is when you think you got it beat. You think... 'I outran it.' Then you turn the corner, bam... there it is... staring you right in the face. Ben: Only it's worse this time. And, you know... it was always gonna be there. There's no escaping it.
A tear rolls down his cheek as he delivers the speech, and it's one of the very few times we see him get emotional. He has only cried one other time, when he was going to kill himself.
The AVTF closes in on them, and Matt struggles to make a decision. He stresses over this decision over and over, terrified that he might leave his morality there too. Dex continues to tell him to leave him there.
Eventually, he caves. Matt says an emotional apology, desperate and overwhelmed. He leaves Dex in the church.
Matt thinks of Foggy again. His kindness, his forgiveness, even when people didn't deserve it. Then turns around, and saves Dex.
they made up, y'all!
Matt drags Dex back to his and Karen's safehouse, and asks for a little help.
Dex looks so effing cute in that gif. Ok show of hands who wants to see Dex's spinal scar!!!!! I hope we see it, cause that's where it ends babyyyyyy.
And that's it! Episode 6 comes out April 21, 9pm Eastern Standard. I will of course keep updating this shrine as episodes release.
do you guys think he's gonna gate crash her funeral?
Who is Matt to Dex? As the season develops, it seems like he's his North Star. *shrug*. Dex has latched onto Matt to steer his morals. We see this with the "I'm a good guy now" and "I'm on your side" stuff. But also, Dex seems to believe that what he does for Matt isn't archoring him down too.
Dex is unintentionally self centered, so when he performs actions that vaguely align with Daredevil's morals, he doesn't think about how it may affect him. Like with Julie, he worried and agonized over her well-being and death, but not because it was her. It was because he was losing direction in himself.
Ultimately, being lost and alone is Dex's greatest fear. Which may be why he latched onto Matt so quickly. That, or because he beat the shit out of him so well (haha).
What is Dex to Matt? We see that they have a very tulmultious relationship, but how does he feel about him? He of course hates what he did, how he killed Foggy, but their relationship takes a large turn after 2.05.
I don't think forgiveness is on the table, yet. Depending on how they develop. But it's not in Dex's cards to reform. Bullseye is now who he is, just like how Matt is Daredevil. They're consumed by their identities, and cannot exist without them.
That's why Matt views him in such a weird way, because they're extremely similar. Well, they're extremely different, but same in important, minute ways. In 2.05, when Dex and Matt finally have a 1-on-1 conversation for the first time since they've met, we see their dynamics at play.
Dex is more than a thorn in his side, he's a pitiful villain that throughout their relaitonship, has been seen at his lowest and highest. Matt extending mercy to him, and even fearfully leaving an apology was very revealing of his character, in that way. Despite generally hating him, I don't Matt truly, utterly, hates Dex. He can't, not in the way he hates Fisk, anyway.
Because Dex is multifaceted. They're in this weird middleground where they're stuck in a boat of their own making. Matt could leave Dex for dead, or turn him to the police, but like what Dex said about enemies, he saved Fisk, so it's not unexpected that he saved Dex as well.
Oops, maybe that wasn't a clear answer. To Matt, I think Dex is a morally very dark gray, villain he has pity for. Pity that he fights, but loses to. He knows that he'll be intertwined with him for a veery long time.
"no one will be able to tell Dex anything because he’ll just bring up how Matt saved him and will take that as proof he’s been redeemed" OH NO BROS
I'm not sure if Matt as Dex's north star will last, but it's so exciting to think about. Dex knows his identity and vice versa, so Matt will never be really be rid of him if it happens. It's a little refreshing, because other than Dex, the only person he has this dynamic with is Fisk.
Don't tell Dex this, but that makes him a little special. As his north star, I think Matt's life would be semi-chaotic. Realistically, Matt is the safest choice for a north star, because he may be the only one who can handle it.
As Daredevil, he deals out justice and is loved by many in New York, then defends people in court as Matt Murdock. THEN, he's also catholic. Triple whammy of morality issues.
Also, Dex being with Matt is like marrying your correctional officer. Like, when Matt is displeased with Dex, he penalizes him VERY heavily. Matt is a crazy person to have be your moral compass bro. But in a way, it's a little nice, because Dex knows when he fucks up because he just kicks the shit out of him.
That might boil down their entire relationship. Dex is like a bad dog that follows around Matt, endeared and idolizing him. While Matt wants him away from him, until his increasingly bad behavior spills into his life, causing him to finally punish him. WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THEM!!!
I kind of wanted to put Closer by NIN but felt that was too edgy. They remind me of KMFDM and Massive Attack a lot, though.
