MOUSLING.net's 100 webmaster questions!

1. Please introduce yourself.
my social security number is 5.
2. How long have you been making websites?
oh... hmm... 2020ish? 5 years? If you count Carrd...
3. And what got you into the hobby?
C*rrd. Though I've always loved beautiful websites as a kid, I used to go on dressupgames.com and just stare at the syrupy pink pallette! Yum!
4. What kind of website are you most interested in?
Ones where the webmaster has a purpose. If the webmaster has passion, I want to be there along the ride
5. What's your workflow? Do you plan your websites out thoroughly or do you come up with the design as you go along?
I generally just make a quick mock-up with an online drawing extension. I start with typing out what elements are going to be on the page, then just go at it. I'm not very organized with my thoughts and make up half the shit on my pages.
6. Please link to your biggest inspirations.
I had to think about it for a while but probably Elly @ Catboo. I think it's because we talk frequently that his ideas rub off on me... Outside of that, probably R.O.B. I wake up screaming thinking of his Sherlock shrine (very positive). like... It's so good... I'll be very scared if he's reading this. Generally though, I think I've developed my own style enough that it's not very obvious who I'm inspired by! It used to be very obvious at the start..................
7. What's your favourite part about making websites?
CSS. It's always CSS. And showing my friends after I'm done.
8. And the thing you struggle with the most?
JS. I'm awful at it. And getting colors right? I also tend to get crazy insane ideas that I can't execute because of my coding level which sucks, but I try to get *close enough*
9. Do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? Or do you use different ones?
Nearly every page is different. When I update pages they're either the same layout upgraded or so far from what they were before. I try to carry a bit of each version into the next.
10. How confident are you with CSS?
Probably too confident! I need to learn more!
11. Do you know how to correctly use <dl>?
Vaguely
12. What is your favourite HTML element?
THIS IS A HARD ONE. <a>. You can do so much with a link. Or <span>, or the hearty <div>!
13. If you're making a new web page from scratch, what is the first thing you do?
Exclamation point + Enter (Emmet abbreviation)
14. Do you know JavaScript?
No.
15. How about PHP?
Hell no!
16. Does your website have a theme that you stick to?
I hope so. I also hope not!
17. Are you more focused on content or design?
Design that shows that I care about the content. But design first..
18. Do you own a domain name? If not, would you ever want to?
No, but if I did it would probably be something like goob.space.
19. What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?
I can't say anything too critical because you have seen you my index? i'm one of those guys...! But I was only mildly around for 'retro' websites lol. I think it makes sense for me because it is actually nostaligic for me, but it also kinda doesn't matter because you can't control what you like. I don't like how swirl-y a lot of them get. As in too close to inspiration that they leave no room for actual self expression part.
20. Is your HTML valid? Do you even check?
I don't think so? But all of my pages should look samey across every browser. I used to check but not so much anymore. When I make floating elements I always adjust my browser size to make sure it's not sliding like a cream pie though.
21. What are your opinion on buttons and banners?
I've probably made too many! But i love peoples buttons and banners, it's like a tiny portable piece of them.
22. What do you think of button walls in particular?
I think they're impressive; I cannot keep up with that!
23. If you started over again, would you make something similar or completely different?
I'm not sure... If I ever quit I would probably have a very good reason so probably something very different at the start that would eventually spiral into Goooby v2 without me noticing.
24. Are you envious of other people's websites?
ya!!!!!!!!! but not for long
25. What text editor do you use?
Visual Studio Code
26. Why do you use that one?
It's the best one I've found so far
27. Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?
I should be stoned for having a file.garden. I host my files because I always end up being too lazy to host on my own site. The only reason I have it is to hold all my graphics w/o taking up my NC storage but now i'm not so sure
28. This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?
No comment! *looks at gun behind me* Nekoweb is...good! *flinches* NEKOWEB IS VERY GOOD!!!!
In truth, I'm only on NC because it existed before NW and I find the NW communinity to be too unfriendly for me sorry... (Because NC is full of saints, right?) I'm in 1 NC server and it's slow-paced and I like that because big servers scare me. I do have a NW account though and now feels ok to admit that I'm probably gonna host OC pages on there. I like NC more cause I like talking to people too much! Either way, NW is like ok to me and honestly pick whichever host you like the most, my gripes are with the communinity if any at all
29. How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?
off the top of my head... 50%? Update: 45.9%, close! If we're talking bandwidth... My site is fat as SHIT and I'm too embarrassed to say the number. (it's 2 digits...)
30. Do you keep local backups of your files?
yup, i have the original files of every page i've ever made.
31. Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?
Simple, but I'm a sucker for highly visual sites where the webmaster has their aesthetic all figured out.
32. Do you stick to certain colours? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?
Every page is guaranteed use one of these colors:
33. Have you ever thought about quitting? Why?
Yup. I've gotten scared someones gonna like find where I live or what school I attend! (not that anyone's ever threatened, but I get skittish) Though I can assure if someone randomly drops my HS name this website is going STRAIGHT DOWN lmao
34. Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?
I have 3 or 4, though I try to convince my friends to let me teach them HTML.
35. Do people in your real life know about your website?
All my siblings do, plus my best friend. They don't visit ever and have no clue what I do on here LMAO. I show them all my pages though and they love it
36. Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?
Once a week, sometimes bi-weekly, sometimes the other kind of bi-weekly. I used to update daily? I consider this often since I'm a struggling HS senior When I start uni i'll probably update once a month or smth like that
37. And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?
I'm pretty happy with my style so I keep the same style for pretty much everything, but rarely update some pages so you'll get jumpscared with uggo old pages from 2 years ago. For shrines, I try my best to get it to fit the media.
38. Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?
I think it's split me/hobby because I think I am pretty inseperable from my hobbies. ...Because I'm autistic... But more hobby. I don't like talking about myself as much anymore.
39. Do you do web design professionally?
Nope, but I considered it! Ultimately not a good idea considering my bad physical health, being sedentary for that long would kill me.

I think I want to keep coding as a hobby. And I'm an unemployed student

Yes, because of my webring. I would love to have a penpal!

I only have Discord and I hate using it

YES YES YESSSS!!!! I'm listening to Sheena Ringo as I type this! Earlier in the quiz I was listening to Gulu Gulu, and before that, Közi.

I talk about just about anything on here

I circle between Chrome, Firefox, and Edge.
54. Speaking of, what's your preferred browser? Convince your readers why they should use it.

It's what my computer came with, and I'm too scared I'll fuck up running Linux
57. Are your websites mobile-friendly?
n.....o. I think 3 of my indexes were? And I don't feel good about it, I REALLY SHOULD. I don't know why I haven't yet.
58. What are your thoughts on autoplay?
I don't think they should go the index. It's fine when it's on a shrine at low volume.
59. What are your thoughts on webrings? Are you in any?
I run one and I'm in several; very fun!
60. Do you have any web shrines? What do you like to see in that sort of page?

It's cool, but deprecated for a reason!
69. How about table-based layouts?
hate them things
70. Do you subscribe to the ideas of "one-column", "two-column" and "three-column" layouts? Do you use any of these?

Sant Joan Despi! I like that the O is a heart. Other than that, my good friend Helvetica.

I rarely go on the NC feed anymore, but I check out the websites that I see the people I follow comment on.
83. Do you bookmark other people's websites? How would you feel knowing someone else bookmarked yours?

Probably the dedication. I have put so many hours into this site!!!!!!!!

Not really. If I tried I'm sure I'd get obsessed.
86. How often and for how long are you online?
Uhmmm.... I'm pretty okay with my screen time right now, but I watch a lot of shows and movies because I don't like relying on social media for entertainment. As for the second part, my YT account is 6 years old so maybe that? But I've been using computers for way longer.

I have wayyy in the past, and they can get the job done but ultimately learn to make a layout and reuse that!
91. Do you keep a hitcounter? Why or why not?
I do, but I rarely think of it anymore. Funnily enough, I use an extension to get rid of followers and view count on neocities because i don't like looking at it. If i'm only allowed to shill one thing in my life I want it to be that.

Nope! But I'm in r/neocities.

96. Would you close down your website if you couldn't update it, or would you leave an archive?

97. Do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? Or are you more secretive?
Probably yes, but I don't like to think about it. I think you can guess what US state I live in but I don't mind that. I think I'm weirdly secretive about the randomest things.
98. Are you willing to reveal who your best online friend is, and/or if they have a website?
